TOMS: Shoes for Tomorrow

TOMS and One Day Without Shoes

by Devan on March 31, 2010

Ok, so if you haven’t heard of TOMS yet then it’s time to come out from under the rock you have been living under. TOMS is a business started by Blake Mycoskie.  Blake saw a need and started a movement that has grown TONS since 2006.  TOMS (Shoes for Tomorrow) is based around one founding and simple principle:

With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.

One for One.

The TOMS shoes design is based off of a shoe type from Argentina. TOMS originally started with one shoe type, but have expanded to Cordones, boot wraps.  For every pair of TOMS that you buy then send a pair to someone in need.  TOMS does “shoe drops” in other countries and here in the US.

TOMS also has a national day of awareness they call “One Day Without Shoes”. Basically for one day you don’t wear shoes, and when people ask why you are not wearing shoes you explain to them how in many other countries kills don’t have shoes, and sometimes die because the lack of shoes.  Here on TROY campus we have a strong group of people who support the TOMS movement, and are participating in One Day Without Shoes.

Go check out the website and learn more. Buy a pair of TOMS and support a good cause while you are browsing around!

MotM! March ’10

by Devan on March 30, 2010

Can I say that this month has been AMAZING!!  It has been full of music and concerts (posts to come!).  This month’s album is one that I have had for a few months, and still listen to regularly.

Waking Up

Waking Up

This month’s album is titled “Waking Up” by OneRepublic. OneRepublic isn’t a widely known band, but they had two big hits (“Apologize” and “Stop & Stare”) off of their previous album “Dreaming Out Loud”.  Based out of Colorado, OneRepublic is a pop/rock fusion band, but still have a rare worldly sound. “Waking Up” is unique in the fact that the band traveled the world and sampled many different sounds from their travels for the album. They play marimbas, glockenspiels, cabasas, organs, and bongos, along with typical rock instruments (bass, drum set, etc.) on the latest album. OneRepublic even has a guy that sings backup vocals, but claps continuously during two songs, and plays a small egg shaker during the songs also.

Go ahead and give their album a shot, and be sure to check out the hits from the album “All the Right Moves”, “Everybody Loves Me”, and “Good Life”.  While you are there check out “Marching On” (blog named after the song).

Well this month was hard. I will not elaborate on why, but I must say I have relied on one main album. BT (Brian Transeau) is called the “Father of Electronica” sometimes. He pushes the bar beyond anything ever heard. BT experiments with circuit bending, microbeats, and many other new complex sounds. Because of this, [...]

Well It is a day after the New Year started, and I have been thinking HARD of New Year’s Resolutions and how I want to do them. I decided I would support each of my resolutions with a Bible verse. Below are my New Year’s Resolutions for 2010:

Well the past few days have been rough, but I have learned something from them. Pessimism: the tendency to see the worst aspect of things or believe the worst will happen.  This one word can be summed up easily as a person that sees the glass half empty instead of half full. Many people have [...]
